We have referred above to some documents containing the expression *lāñchita* which really means ‘endowed with the *lāñchana* or emblem’, i.e. ‘stamped with the royal seal’. This is generally noticed in the inscriptions of the Ganjam-Srikakulam region on the borders between Orissa and Andhra Pradesh such as the Ganjam plates³ of Vidhyādhara-bhañja referred to above and the Svalpavelura grant⁴ which was attested or registered by the king’s seal (*lāñchita*) by the queen (*mahādevī*) Śrīvāsa-bhaṭṭārikā.⁴ The same process is referred to in the East Indian records of the early medieval period, which speak of the stamping of the original document, later copied on a copper plate, by a seal bearing the representation of the royal family’s emblem.⁵
