In a simpler system prevalent in South India, the letters of the alphabet from *ka* to *ḷa* represented respectively the numbers 1 to 34, *kā* to *ḷā* the numbers 35 to 68, *ki* to *ḷi* the numbers 69 to 102, and so on.
