¹ For the development of the Vikramāditya tradition, see H.C. Raychaudhuri’s ‘Vikramāditya in History and Legend’ in *Vikrama Volume*, pp. 483ff. Some writers of the medieval period, e.g., Kālidāsa, author of the *Jyotirvidābharaṇa*, and Harisvāmin, commentator on the Ṛgveda, tried to imply that their works were composed under the patronage of king Vikramāditya in the first century B.C. Cf. Ojha, *Bhāratīya Prācin Lipimālā*, pp. 166, note 1; *Bhāratīya Vidyā*, Vol. IX, 1948, pp. 325-90.
