² It is interesting to note in this connection that the Maukharis claimed king Aśvapati as their progenitor while the same epic ruler is represented in the *Mahābhārata* (III. 296. 59-60) as the progenitor of the Mālavas. See *Ind. Cult.*, Vol. I, pp. 298 ff.
