To get the equivalent in the Christian era, one has to add 78-79 to the years of the Śaka era. The era is popular in the land to the south of the Narmadā, where the year begins on Caitra-sudi 1 and the months are Amānta. But, in the areas of the South where solar months are in use, the year begins from the Meṣa-saṅkrānti. The years of the Śaka era are generally counted as expired. The reckoning is commonly mentioned also in the North Indian almanacs, though there the months are regarded as Pūrṇimānta.
