¹ Lévi’s suggestion that *parigṛhīta* in such cases means ‘admitted in the family by adoption’ (op. cit., p. 86, note 3) is palpably wrong, since Candragupta II was not an adopted son of Samudragupta, but is clearly stated to have been born of the latter’s queen Dattadevī (*Select Inscriptions*, pp. 313, 321).
