The Cālukya emperors of Bādāmi, including the great Pulakeśin II (610-42 A.D.), called themselves *Mahārāja*, though they soon adopted the more dignified combination of the three titles *Mahārājādhirāja*, *Parameśvara* and *Bhaṭṭāraka* (usually note *Paramabhaṭṭāraka*).³ In the records of the successors of Pulakeśin II, that king is stated to have assumed the title *Parameśvara* as a result of his victory over the imperial ruler Harṣavardhana of Northern India, though Pulakeśin’s own Hyderabad plates state that he assumed the said title after defeating certain hostile kings by 612 A.D. apparently before his engagement with Harṣa.⁴
