In ancient and medieval India, official designations were often stereotyped as family names. The most well-known instances of this amongst royal families are those of the Pratīhāras and the Rāṣṭrakūṭas. Official designations of the medieval age, such as Majumdār or Majmudār (from Perso-Arabic *Majumdār*¹), were also similarly stereotyped.
