A class of high functionaries under Aśoka is merely referred to as 'the officer' (*Puruṣa*) probably meaning special agents of the king.⁶ Among minor officers, mention is made of the reporters (*Prativedaka*) and scribes (*Lipikara*).⁷ The officers in charge of the royal cattle and pasture lands (*Vraja-bhūmika*)⁸ appear to have belonged to a higher class.
