³ Cf. the later *Kotwāl* generally regarded as a Persian word meaning 'the chief officer of police for a city or town, a superintendent of the markets' (Wilson's Glossary). The commnander of a fort seems to be called *Viśiṣa* (a word of uncertain derivation) in certain early medieval records of the central areas of India (cf. *Ep. Ind.*, Vol. XXX, p. 89).
