Another land measure of the same type is the *Hala*, literally ‘a plough’.¹ It may have originally indicated an area of land that could be cultivated by a pair of bullocks during a year. Its area is now different in different parts of the country. In Rajasthan, it is regarded as equal to 50 *Bīghās*;² but ‘the plough’ (indicated variously in the regional languages) has different areas in other parts of the country.
