In the records of the Kannada-speaking area, we have mention, besides Nivartana or Mattaru referred to above, of the Hāda (i.e. Sanskrit Pāda really meaning one-fourth of the standard land measure) and Kamma (also found as kamba, kambha, stambha, etc.).⁶ 4 Hādas were regarded as equal to 1 Mattaru (Nivartana) since an inscription of 1218 A.D. speaks of 2+2+1+1 (i.e. 6) Hādas as the same as 1 Mattaru and 2 Hādas.⁷ The same inscription suggests that 100 Kambas or Kammas made 1 Mattaru since it equates 2 Hādas + 35 Kambas + 1 *Hāda*+35 *Kambas*+35 *Kambas*+ 35 *Kambas* (i.e. 3 *Hādas* and 140 *Kambas*) with 2 *Mattarus* and 15 *Kambas*.
