It is no accident, because these two geological formations have an important bearing on the soils, and consequently on the vegetation, food and economic life of the people. The Trappean fertile 'Black-soil' is the land of wheat, cotton, *bajra* and pulses. On the other hand, the red metamorphic loams of Andhra produce rice, sugar, sesamum, and millet. Telangana has a better but uncertain rainfall, yet, the soil cannot retain moisture. Hence it is a land of tanks and other means of artificial irrigation. As Law put it, "these differences in physical nature are associated with soil, economic and linguistic differences in the two natural divisions of the State."¹
