Recent archaeological work has shown the difference in the cultural *milieu* of the first extensive agricultural and pastoral settlements of both the areas. The more wooded upper reaches of the Godavary were first exploited by widely distributed Chalcolithic communities with heavy metal tools of copper and bronze,² which must have enabled them to clear the forests. The lower valleys, falling within the Gneissic-metamorphic zones supported wide-spread Neolithic agricultural folk, living on or near the granite outcrops overlooking their fields. There is interesting evidence, probably of trade or other contacts between the two regions. It will be discussed in greater detail at a later stage.
