In one way and another, then, the Mauryan was heir to the Great King. There is, however, an archaeological time-gap in the process of transmission. Persepolis was burned in 330 B.C., and the earliest relevant works of Ashoka shortly ante-date the middle of the 3rd century. What in the interim had happened to the homeless Persian craftsmen? I am inclined to think that Megasthenes and Pāṭaliputra, between them, come to the rescue.
