Attirampakkam near Madras is an important site which demands further work. Professor Zeuner informs me that the early series here, consisting of pebble-tools, flakes and handaxes, is pre-laterite. Then came a laterite-weathering phase, [Figure: Figs. 7-8] during which the decomposition of the earlier implements proceeded. This was followed by the denudation of the laterite deposit, and the sediments thus formed in the valleys contain an Acheulian industry with a strong flake-component. The so-called Attirampakkam 5 series (late Acheulian) is fresh and is found in the lowest or latest terrace.
