The general picture is that of a community squatting on the dry sandy soil during a period of moderate rainfall, and occupied in the manufacture of small blades of which many may be supposed to have been set in bone or wood as composite tools. The small pebbles available for this purpose may have been collected in the Sabarmati river, some eighteen miles away. The community lived mainly on the products of the chase, but they supplemented their meat with prepared grasses or herbs, which nature may have provided without artificial aid. Pottery in the accepted sense was either absent or, if sparsely present, was of the crudest sort.
