Within the limited area trenched, there was in Period III an accumulation of 5-9 feet, with evidence of 3-6 sub-phases; and it seemed that the Period had ended in fire. That the event occurred in or very little before the 2nd century B.C. is suggested by the facts that the N.B.P. Ware now ceased and that 5 coins of the rulers of Mathurā, attributed to that century, were found in the lower (earlier) strata of the succeeding Period IV. Both that Period, which is carried by coinage through a number of sub-phases into the 3rd century A.D., and a medieval occupation (11th-15th century), which followed after a long gap, lie outside our present scope.
