In its earliest civic phase, represented by six feet of strata, it included stone and baked-brick structures associated with arrowheads of bone and iron, spearheads and choppers of iron, and evidences of copper-working. Some of the pottery was the Black-and-red Ware already encountered elsewhere; with it were a black-slipped fabric and sherds of unslipped and red-slipped vesiculated ware, some of it made without the wheel. In the body of the rampart two sherds of Painted Grey Ware—the southernmost examples known—are not likely to be much later than 500 B.C.
