The difficulty of study is referred to in such expressions as *kashṭo' gniḥ*, *kashṭam vyākaraṇam*, *tato'pi kashṭatarāṇi sāmāni*, 'hard to master is the Fire ritual (*Śatapatha*, Bks. VI-IX); so is Grammar; but still more difficult are the *Sāman* songs' (*Kāśikā*, VII. 2. 22).
