In the Pārshada or Prātiśākhya tradition of the *Caraṇas* *Om* was pronounced at the commencement of *svādhyāya*. Pāṇini says that for this purpose it was to be uttered with a *pluta* accent (*Om-abhyādāne*, VIII.2.87).
