JAYA—In the *sūtra*, *Jayaḥ karaṇam* (VI.1.202) Pāṇini refers to *jaya* as a technical term implying an instrument of victory (*jayanti teneti jayaḥ*, *Kāśikā*), which was distinguished from the other word *jaya* denoting victory by an acute accent on its initial vowel. This term is found on many *Gaṇa* coins and must be interpreted in the new light received from Pāṇini's rule. For example, the formula *Yaudheya-gaṇasya jayaḥ* on the coins of the Yaudheya republic, proclaims the coin as the symbol of Yaudheya authority. The issuing of coins was an exclusive prerogative of their sovereignty over that territory.
