*PATAÑJALI'S TRIBUTE*—Patañjali, the author of the *Mahābhāshya*, has applied his mastermind to reveal the depth and range of Pāṇini's scholarship. Like Kātyāyana, Patañjali applies the term *Bhagavān* exclusively to Pāṇini in recognition of his supreme position in the field of study he had made his own. Only once the epithet refers also to Kātyāyana (III. 2. 3; II. 97) (Kielhorn, *J.R.A.S.*, 1908, p. 503).
