The ending *sthala* occurs in the name Kapisthala implied in *sūtra* (VIII.3.91, modern Kaithal in Karnal district). It may be noted that the ending *sthala* had an alternative form *sthalī* (IV.1.42). Pāṇini takes it in the sense of a natural (*akṛitrima*) dry land. The *Kāśikā* instances under *sthalī* Dāṇḍāyanasthalī and Māhakisthalī.
