(1) The commentary *Samanta-pāsādikā* of Buddhaghosha on the *Vinaya-Piṭaka* tells us that in the time of king Bimbisāra in the city of Rājagṛiha a *kahāpaṇa* was equal to twenty *māsakas*, wherefore one *pāda* equalled five *māsakas*.¹ This statement is confirmed by *Sāratthadīpanī* of Sāriputta Thera, a commentary on the *Samanta-pāsādikā*.²
