Let us now try to determine the actual amount of the land tax that was levied by the governments of our period. The paucity of records throwing any light on the subject, the vagueness of their statements when available, and the difficulty of interpreting the technical terms used in them are the main reasons that have so far deterred an enquiry in this direction; but it is high time that an effort at least should be made.
