As to social relations between the Muslims and the Hindus, Alberuni informs us that no drinking or eating with a Mlechchha was permitted in his time.(156) In the 14th century Malabar, Muslims were not allowed to enter Hindu houses.(157) There is no evidence as to the social relations between the two communities in the ports on western India during our period; as already pointed out, the Muslims in the Deccan during our period were using Indian dress and language.(158) It is, therefore, perhaps likely that there may not have been too much exclusiveness during our period at least in the Deccan. During the 14th century, even in the distant Malabar and Bengal the Hindus had begun to worship Muslim Pirs and Shaikhs;(159) one cannot be, therefore, sure that the mosques in the ports on western India had no Hindu worshippers.
