S'ankarāchārya had founded four Mathas in the four corners of India and very soon subsidiary ones sprang into existence. Till recently these institutions were powers in the land; a decree ( ājñāpatra ) from them was respected by society as implicitly as the command of the king. What was the influence of these institutions over the Deccan of our period?
