In a recent monograph of the Royal Asiatic Society,¹²² it has been asserted that the prices of the food-stuffs towards the beginning of the 11th century A.D., which have been tabulated above, were about 725% higher than the prices current in the Gupta period. The theory of this tremendous rise in prices is indeed arresting, and let us see whether the prices under the Cholas and the Rāṣṭrakūṭas were really so much higher than those under the Imperial Guptas.
