v1.c10.17
According to geologists, there is a great interval between the Palæolithic period and the Neolithic in India. Foote saw that Palæoliths were found in the bed of the Sabarmati in Gujarat in a bed of coarse shingle and the Neoliths are found about 250 feet above that level on high level loess. While Palæoliths are found for the most part on the Deccan plateau, Neoliths are discovered over a much wider range. In the Neolithic period the types of stone implements are very large in number. No information has yet forth-come about Palæoliths discovered in the country between the Chilka lake and the mouth of the Kṛṣṇā, save a single Palæolith now in the Madras Museum, which was found near Ostapalle in the Kṛṣṇā district.²
