v2.c41.217
Jānuji had become exasperated after three years of fruitless negotiations, and when the British turned a deaf ear to his appeal for aid against the Peshwa Mādhav Rāo I before the treaty of Kankāpur, he refused to allow a British army to proceed to Madras against Haidar 'Ali of Mysore. On the 13th December the Governor wrote to Sambhājī Gaṇesh to allow English troops to pass through¹ Orissa, but under instructions from Nagpur Sambhājī refused it on the plea of scarcity in his province and the rapacity of British troops.²
