The Age of the Imperial Guptas c10.92

Language: English

c10.92

There are several varieties in Class II; in the first one the circular legend on the obverse is *Gupta-kulavyoma-śaśī Jayaty=ajeyo-’jita-Mahendraḥ*. In the second variety of Class II the legend changes into *Gupta-kul=āmala-candro-Mahendra-karm=ājito jayati*. In this variety the horse is going to the left.⁴ The reverse legend in all classes is *Ajita-Mahendraḥ*. Another freak type of the gold coinage of Kumāragupta I is the Lion-slayer type:—
