the possession of Ballâla was taken. All this was but a child's play to King Singhaṇa."¹⁵ Jajjalla must have been a prince belonging to the eastern branch of the Chedi dynasty that ruled over the province of Chhattîsgaṛh, for that name occurs in the genealogy of that dynasty.¹⁶ The name Kakkala I would identify with Kokkalla, which was borne by some princes of the western branch of the family, the capital of which was Tripurî or Tevur. The kings of Mâḷava and Kâsi were killed by him in battle, and Hammîra was vanquished by but a boy-general of Singhaṇa.¹⁷ In an inscription also at Tîḷivallî in the Dhârvâḍ District, he is represented to have defeated Jajjalladeva, conquered Ballâḷa the Hoysaḷa king, subdued Bhoja of Panhâḷâ, and humbled the sovereign of Mâḷava.¹⁸ He is also spoken of as "the goad of the elephant in the shape of the Gûrjara king."¹⁹ We have an inscription of his at Gaddaka dated 1135 S'âka, which shows that Vîra Ballâḷa must have been deprived of the southern part of the country before that time.²⁰ Singhaṇa is represented as reigning at his capital Devagiri.²¹
