v4.c16.184

Meanwhile Salīm continued his drinking bouts, and in his fits of intoxication committed the most revolting cruelties. The newswriter who reported his misdeeds was flayed alive in his presence; he emasculated one of his father’s servants, and beat one of his own to death. These atrocities roused the wrath of Akbar, and he set out from Āgra to call his son to account, but was first delayed by the grounding of his boat, and then by heavy rain, and before he could proceed was recalled to Āgra by the illness of his mother who died on 10 September immediately after his arrival. He mourned her in Hindu fashion, shaving himself clean.
