During the second night after Akbar’s flight, Durgā Dās, having discovered the fraud played by Aurangzīb, turned back and took the luckless prince under his protection. Rājput honour demanded that the refugee should be defended at all cost. After evading the pursuing Mughul columns and fleeing through Rājputāna and Khāndesh, Durgā Dās boldly and skilfully conducted Akbar to the court of Shambhūjī, the only power in India that could defy Aurangzīb (11 June, 1681).
