Shivājī had already, while Aurangzīb was engaged in hostilities against Bījāpur, in May, 1657, committed his first acts of aggression on the imperial dominions and been forgiven. Aurangzīb’s preoccupation in the north left Shivājī and ‘Alī ‘Ādil Shāh free for some time, the one to pursue his ambitious schemes and the other to attempt to free his kingdom from incursions. Shivājī experienced his first serious reverse in an attempt to seize the territories of Sīdī Jauhar, an important assignee in the Konkan, but later in the same year, 1659, he obtained a signal success over the arms of Bījāpur.
