On 12 March, 1700, Rājā Rām died at Sinhgarh. His senior widow Tārā Bāi placed her son Shivāji III on the throne, while another wife Rājas Bāi crowned her son as Shambhūjī II, and the Marāthā ministers and generals were again divided into two rival factions. But Tārā Bāi’s ability and energy, seconded by the genius of Parashurām Trimbak (the new regent), gave her supreme power in the state.
