² The office of Pratinidhi or King’s Representative was created by Rājā Rām in 1690 and was supernumerary to Shivājī’s Council of Eight. The word Peshwā, or Prime Minister, is Persian, and dates from Muhammad I Bahmanī (1358–77). Shivājī preferred the Sanskrit title Mukhya Pradhān. Briggs, *Ferishta* III, 150 note; Grant Duff, I, 150.
