It seems that Chashtana was first a vassal of Gautamiputra for the following three reasons: (1) Chashtana first bore only the title of Kshatrapa (2) The reverse side of the coins of Chashtana contains the Chaitya with 3 arches which characterises the coins restruck by Gautamiputra (3) The Nāsik inscription says that Gautamiputra was the lord of Surāshtra and Mālwa.
