The first Mahârâja, Pravarasêna I. was the son of Vindyaśakti, "the banner of the Vâkâṭaka race" mentioned in the Ajanṭâ (A. S. W. I., IV, p. 124) inscription without any royal title. Pravarasêna I. performed sacrifices, especially Aśvamedha. Gautamîputra, who died probably before his father, as is seen by his never being a Mahârâja, married the daughter of Bhavanâga, king of the Bhâraśivas, "who were besprinkled on the forehead with the pure water of Bhâgîrathî (the Gaṅgâ)". It is probable that Bhavanâga who reigned near the Ganges belonged to the family of the Nâgas of Padmâvati.
