Sambháji left a child named Shiváji afterwards known as Sháhu; but as he was only six years old, Sambháji's brother Rám Rájá was made regent. The Marátha chiefs now met to decide on a plan for opposing Aurangzíb, whose power may well have seemed to them overwhelming. They decided that the principal forts should be carefully garrisoned; that Rám Rájá should move from one fort to the other, and if hard pressed should retire to Jinji in the Karnátak. The Marátha chiefs were to plunder and annoy the enemy in their old fashion. The principal men at this time were Pralhád Niráji on of the late Nyáyádhish Pradhán, Janárdan Pant Sámant, Rámchandra Pant Bourikar Amát, Máhádáji NáiK Pánsambal the Senápati, Santáji Ghorpade, Dhanáji Jádhav, and Khanderáo Dábháde.
