A wall of communication ran up the side of the hill on the south shore from a battery of eleven embrasures on a level with the water, which like the other fortifications was in very bad repair.⁵ The factory at Fort Victoria was found useful during this war as the Resident purchased and received from Poona between eleven and twelve thousand bullocks,⁶ and sent them down the coast for the use of the army.⁷ At this time Thána is described as a straggling town with several Portuguese churches and a number of Christian inhabitants.
