During my tenure of the above-mentioned appointment, and for a year or so before it, I had from the Bombay Government an annual grant for the collection of impressions of inscriptions in the Bombay Presidency. Two hundred and twenty-villages, in the Belgaum and Dhârwâr Districts and in the Native States of the Southern Marâṭhâ Country, were visited by the men employed by me. Impressions were made of nearly a thousand inscriptions. And the impressions have now been deposited in the office of Mr. Cousens, Superintendent of the Bombay Archæological Survey, where they are available to anyone who will take them in hand for publication or study.
