And, except in the cases of Sâmantabhadra and Akalaṅka, their earlier limit is fixed by the facts, that both Vidyânanda and Prabhâchandra quote the Saṅskrit grammarian Bhartṛihari, author of the Vâkyapadîya, — Prabhâchandra also mentioning Kumârila, who again quotes Bhartṛihari, — and that, according to the statement of the Chinese pilgrim I-tsing, Bhartṛihari died in A. D. 650.¹
