⁴ The Gadag inscription of A. D. 1192 (*Ind. Ant*. Vol. II. p. 299). The published translation of the verse which mentions Brahma needs correction; what the text really says, is, that the Hoysaḷa Baḷḷâḷa II. defeated with cavalry only, and took away the sovereignty from, that (famous) general Brahma, whose troops were supported by an array of elephants, and who had conquered sixty tusked elephants with one young tuskless elephant, when, in contempt of his father, he was depriving the Kalachuryas of the sovereignty.
