The southern Koṅkaṇ branch of the family seems to have been, by date of origin, the oldest of the three. For what we know about it, we are dependent on a copper-plate grant from Khârêpâṭaṇ in the Ratnâgiri District,⁸ which furnishes the genealogical list shewn on the opposite page. This record describes the Silâhâra family, rather peculiarly, as “the best of the Siṃhala kings,” thus, apparently, connecting them with the rulers of Siṃhala or Ceylon,—perhaps, however, only because of some fancied resemblance between the names; and it says that the race took its origin from Jîmûtavâhana, the lord of the Vidyâdharas, son of Jîmûtakêtu, who gave his life to Garuṭmat (Garuḍa).
