Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor of Delhi, fell sick in 1658, and Prān Nārāyan, Raja of Koch Bihār,* took advantage of the confusion caused by the wars of succession that followed, to throw off the Muhammadan yoke. He made raids into Goālpāra, and two of the local chiefs fled to Beltola, where Jayadhvaj Singh took them under his protection. Mir Lutfullah Shivazi, the Muhammadan Faujdār of Kāmrup and Hājo tried to oppose him, but the bulk of his troops had been withdrawn by Prince Shuja; he was defeated by Prān Nārāyan's army under his Vazir Bhabānāth, and retreated to Gauhāti.
