When Rudra Singh died, his eldest son Sib Singh, who was with him at Gauhāti, at once proceeded to Rangpur, where he ascended the throne. He assumed the Ahom name Sutānphā. He gave up the projected invasion of Bengal, but obeyed his father's injunction to become a disciple of Krishnarām Bhattāchārjya. He gave him the management of the hill temple of Kāmākhyā, whence Krishnarām and his successors are generally known as the Parbatiya Gosāins, and assigned to him for its maintenance large areas of land in various parts of the country. The modern Sāktas of Assam are the disciples of these Gosāins, or of the Nāti and Na Gosāins, who will be mentioned further on.
