Gaurināth Singh did not long survive his restoration to power. In less than eighteen months after Captain Welsh's return to Bengal he was seized with a mortal illness, and, on the 19th December, 1794. his misspent life came to an end. The Burhā Gohāin, who was on the spot, concealed his death; and, on the pretence that the king had sent for the Bar Barua, induced that officer to come to the palace, where, still using the king's name, he caused him to be arrested and put to death. Having got rid of his most powerful rival, he announced Gaurināth's death and appointed as his successor Kināram, a descendant of Gadādhar Singh who, he declared, had been nominated by Gaurināth himself on his death-bed.
