Bar Barua. As the dominions of the Ahoms were gradually extended, it was found necessary to delegate many of the king's duties to others, and various new appointments were created. The most important were those of Bar Barua and Bar Phukan, both of which owe their origin to Pratāp Singh. The appointments in question were not hereditary, and they could be filled by any member of twelve specified families. Members of the families from which the three great Gohāins were respectively recruited were not eligible for these posts. The object of their exclusion seems to have been to prevent the accumulation of too much power in the hands of a single family.
